What are the different weaving styles?
*Flat – woven kilim style weavings:
Traditional flat, two-dimensional rugs that we see in more high traffic spaces and places of social gathering.
Traditional flat mats, kilims, some with heavy weaving techniques, for lower traffic areas, and the thinner and more durable ones for higher traffic spots.
*Not-Flat – Knot Pile Rugs:
Three-dimensional rugs most closely associated with wall-to-wall carpeting. The fluff on carpets is called pile and the type of material and the way it’s woven and cut/washed, it can create different effects.
In the interest of simplicity, Canari Annex will refer to the pile as high, medium, and low.
*Tapestry and embroidery:
A tapestry is a thinner flat-weave textile, similar to drapery, it’s more like thick cloth than heavier floor pieces. Tapestries are typically made from multiple layers of fabric or a base fabric and then additional decoration is hand-sewn on top to create counter-opposing images, effects, and emotions.
Tapestries have traditionally been hung on walls, but they can be carefully used to decorate floors as well.
Runners:
A runner is a long narrow textile, named for its dimensions rather than its style. It is intended to be run down a hall to tie the rooms of the house together. It can be both knot pile and/or kilim.
What materials are the rugs made from?
We offer only handmade products and we do our best to source pieces made with natural fibers and dyes. Most pieces sold are typically made in small factories and workshops of less than twenty people, using traditional methods of dying and sourcing of materials.
What’s your return policy?
Because these are one of a kind and sent overland from Iraq via Turkey, returns are not possible. Please be very clear with us regarding your needs and will do our best to describe all products clearly and accurately.
What are your cleaning instructions?
At home option: Begin by setting up a strong line or wall to lay the piece over and beat the hell out of it with a broom. Then lay the piece on a clean flat outdoor surface, or maybe soak it in a kiddy pool.
Wet it down and then run lines of dishwashing or laundry detergent over and across. Spray the water over it again. Use a clean, nylon broom to move the soap around, and a foam squeegee to pull the water across the rug. Continue to spray the piece and pull the squeegee across it until the water runs clean. Thoroughly thoroughly run water until it’s clean or at least no soap, can’t stress that enough because dried soap is what makes a carpet stiff.
Hang the piece over your line and let it dry in shifts of like 4-8 hours depending on the weather, remember to turn it often, length wise – width wise to avoid any kind of hard creasing or fade/runs.
*Note: prolonged direct sunlight is the number one killer for these works, you can ruin them completely if you leave them out in one direction in direct sunlight for too long, otherwise they are made to last a thousand years so sweep them, beat them, wash em, toss them, fluff them with abandon and they will come and stay alive!
